Despite smooth free motion, well fit & oiled plain ways don't require setting positive hard stops for routine operations like wheel dressing. Spin grinding something in a spindex doesn't drift over, etc. I strongly advise auto feeds if much actual surface grinding is going to be done, though. I routinely use auto even for small tool making. smt

Since my Cincinnati T&C grinder is such a bad idea as a surface grinder, I recently picked up a Mitsui 205MH (circa 1960). This is a 6x18 with overtravel, and is indeed built on the 6x12 200MH chassis. Many parts are interchangeable between the two sizes, and parts and manuals are readily available.
